Rodrygo Expresses Disappointment Over Ballon d’Or Snub
Real Madrid forward, Rodrygo has voiced his disappointment after being excluded from the 30-man shortlist for the 2024 Ballon d’Or.
The 23-year-old Brazilian, who had an impressive season with 17 goals and nine assists in 51 appearances for Los Blancos, failed to secure a nomination for football’s most prestigious individual accolade, unlike his teammates Jude Bellingham, Dani Carvajal, Fede Valverde, Antonio Rudiger, and Vinicius Jr.
In an interview with ESPN, Rodrygo shared his feelings about the omission: “I was upset, I think I deserved it. I don’t want to belittle the players who are there; they deserved it as well. But I think I had a place in the 30.”
Rodrygo’s exclusion came as surprise, especially given his pivotal role in Real Madrid’s La Liga and Champions League campaigns, as well as his contributions to the Brazilian national team.
His consistent performances and versatility made him a key figure for both club and country last season.
The Ballon d’Or nominees are chosen by France Football’s editorial team, in collaboration with the Ballon d’Or ambassador and select media members.
The winner will be announced in Paris on October 28th.
Rodrygo hinted that his versatility, often playing multiple roles for both Real Madrid and Brazil, may have contributed to his omission.
“Often, I’m just filling spaces,” he remarked. “Is someone missing there? Put Rodrygo in. Is someone missing on the right? Rodrygo. Is someone missing as number nine? Rodrygo. That’s it. It may get in my way a little, but I’m a team player.”
Despite the setback, Rodrygo remains focused on his football and determined to continue performing at the highest level.
