The 3rd edition of the All Star Festival in Tamale wasn’t just about celebrating football’s future and present; it also served as a platform to remember its influential figures at a special occasion, the legends night.

A special tribute was paid to the late Alhaji Mohammed Nuru-Deen Jawula, a former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Chairman whose dedication to the sport left a lasting legacy.

Alhaji Jawula, also known as Lepowura M.N.D Jawula, served as GFA Chairman from 1997 to 2001. His commitment extended beyond his chairmanship, with his involvement in prestigious committees like the MTN FA Cup Committee and the Ghana Premier League Organizing Committee continuing until his passing.

He was a multifaceted leader with a distinguished career in public service. His impact transcended the GFA, evidenced by his role as the Chief Director of the Ministry of Finance.

A Life Dedicated to Service

Born in 1949, Alhaji Jawula’s academic achievements were noteworthy. He held a first degree in English and Economics from the University of Cape Coast, followed by a Master’s degree in African Literature and Social Policy from the University of Ghana, Legon.

His dedication to public service spanned an impressive 32 years in the civil service.

He began his career as an assistant Division Officer and rose to the prestigious position of Chief Director, serving in various ministries such as Health, Finance, Harbours & Railways.

His commitment to his community was further evidenced by his role as District Chief Executive for Walewale and Gambaga from 1979 to 1980.

A Passion for Football

Alhaji Jawula’s passion for football extended beyond the administrative side. He served as Chairman of the Real Tamale United Management Committee, demonstrating his commitment to the sport at the club level. He even owned his own club, Guan United, highlighting his dedication to grassroots development.

The All Star Festival’s “legends night” served as a fitting tribute to this remarkable leader. His legacy as a football administrator and public servant will continue to inspire future generations in Ghana.

Mas-ud Didi Dramani, the current head coach of Ghana’s Under 23 Black Galaxies, received the honour on behalf of Alhaji Jawula’s family. Dramani spoke of the immense influence Jawula had on the northern region’s footballing community.
