Ghana’s all-time top scorer, Asamoah Gyan, has heaped praise on former national teammate Kwadwo Asamoah, calling him the most underrated player he’s ever played with.
In an exclusive interview with TV3’s New Day, Gyan reflected on the careers of some of his former teammates and singled out Kwadwo Asamoah for special mention.
Kwadwo Asamoah had a great career. Just look at the clubs he played for. Juventus, Udinese, Inter Milan. I think people really slept on him, Gyan said. He’s easily the most underrated Ghanaian player I’ve played with.
Kwadwo Asamoah enjoyed an illustrious career in Europe, becoming one of Ghana’s most successful exports to Italy’s Serie A. He won multiple league titles with Juventus and later featured for Inter Milan, gaining a reputation for his versatility and tactical intelligence.
On the international stage, Asamoah was a key part of the Black Stars, playing in four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and two FIFA World Cups. His talent and dedication earned him several accolades, including CAF’s Most Promising African Player in 2010 and Ghana Player of the Year in both 2012 and 2013.
In 2013, his global recognition peaked when Bloomberg ranked him 27th among the world’s best footballers.
Gyan, who currently serves as an ambassador for the 2025 CAF African Schools Football Championship, said it was important to acknowledge players like Asamoah, whose contributions often fly under the radar despite their immense impact.
