Equatorial Guinea Qualify for 2025 AFCON After Togo’s Defeat to Liberia

Equatorial Guinea has secured their spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) without needing to kick a ball, following Togo’s 1-0 defeat to Liberia in their Group E qualifier on Wednesday.

The result assures the Central African nation a top-two finish in their group, securing their place in the tournament set to be held in Morocco.

The Sparrowhawks of Togo needed a victory to keep their qualification hopes alive. However, their campaign came to an end when Liberia’s Mohammed Sangare converted a penalty in the 83rd minute, sealing the win for the Lone Stars in Monrovia.

With this loss, Togo will miss out on a fourth consecutive AFCON tournament, their last appearance dating back to 2017 in Gabon.

Equatorial Guinea now joins an elite group of teams already qualified for the 2025 AFCON, including Algeria, Angola, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, DR Congo, Egypt, and Senegal.

Although they have two remaining fixtures, a home match against Algeria on Thursday and an away game against Togo on Sunday, the National Thunder’s place in Morocco is secure.

This qualification continues Equatorial Guinea’s successful recent history in African football. Earlier this year, they reached the last 16 of the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, demonstrating their growing competitiveness on the continent.

Led by standout players like Pablo Ganet, who played a pivotal role in their 2023 campaign, Equatorial Guinea is now focused on building a squad capable of making a strong impact in Morocco.
