In a festival designed to showcase Ghana’s brightest talents on and off the pitch, one of the most heartwarming stories to emerge from the All Star Festival is that of Abdul Malik Fadlullah Kataali, a 17-year-old journalist whose passion for sports media is turning heads.
Abdul Malik first caught attention during the third edition of the All Star Festival in Tamale, where his sharp questions and confident demeanor earned him praise from key figures in Ghanaian football and media.
Among those impressed was Dr. Ernest Koranteng, CEO of The BAC Group, who offered him words of encouragement that would later change his path.
One year ago at the Tamale edition, I got to ask Dr. Ernest Koranteng a few questions after the launch. He called me over and encouraged me. That moment stayed with me, Abdul Malik said.
Fast forward to 2025, and Abdul Malik once again earned his place, this time covering the festival in Accra at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium. For the young journalist, the opportunity wasn’t just about football coverage, it was about connections, growth, and inspiration.
Growing up, I had a passion for sports communication. My father was a FIFA referee, and watching him inspired me to follow a similar path, not on the field, but in the media space, he said.
At the Accra edition, Abdul Malik got the rare opportunity to interact with high-profile footballers including Thomas Partey, Jordan Ayew, and Majid Ashimeru, Afena Gyan as well as media and entertainment giants like Akabenezer, Dancegod Lloyd and Clemento Suarez.
Reflecting on his journey, he credits his confidence and determination as his biggest tools:
It all started at the Alhaji Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium. I got to ask questions at post-match conferences, and one day, former Black Stars goalkeeper Abukari Damba told me, ‘Young boy, you’re doing well. Keep it up.’ That was a spark for me.
But Abdul Malik isn’t just making a name for himself, he’s also determined to inspire others.
If you’re young and passionate, don’t let your age be a barrier. Do your best, because you never know when an opportunity will open up for you, he advised.
He believes the All Star Festival is more than just a football event, it’s a platform that empowers young people to dream and take action.
The All Star Festival is a post-season celebration, but it also shows young people that anything is possible. Some players we didn’t see in earlier editions are now stars. That inspires me, he added.
