Ghana Olympic Committee Halts King’s Baton Relay Following Obuasi Helicopter Tragedy

The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has temporarily suspended the King’s Baton Relay, a key activity ahead of the Commonwealth Games, in light of the devastating helicopter crash near Obuasi that claimed the lives of eight prominent individuals.

The tragic incident, which occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, included the deaths of two high-ranking government officials — Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

In a statement released Thursday, August 7, the GOC expressed profound grief, describing the suspension as a mark of respect during a period of national mourning.

“The nation is in mourning… we have decided to put the relay on hold until further notice,” the statement read.

The GOC assured the public that updates on the relay’s resumption will be communicated in due course and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and the nation at large.

The King’s Baton Relay, which promotes unity and anticipation ahead of the Commonwealth Games, had been making its way through selected locations in Ghana.
