GPL Matchday 5: Asante Kotoko Ascends to the Top of the Table After Narrow Win Over Accra Lions
Asante Kotoko ascended to the top of the Ghana Premier League table following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Accra Lions at the Len Clay Sports Stadium on Sunday.
The Porcupine Warriors secured all three points courtesy of Albert Amoah’s second-half goal, which was enough to see them leapfrog Medeama SC at the summit of the standings.
Kotoko, riding high on momentum after their midweek win over Nsoatreman in an outstanding matchday two fixture, dominated the game from the outset.
Despite their commanding presence, the first half ended goalless, with Accra Lions’ defense proving resolute.
However, the breakthrough came just three minutes into the second half. Saaka Dauda delivered an out-swinging cross that found Albert Amoah, who calmly tapped the ball into the net to give Kotoko the decisive lead.
The home side had an opportunity to double their advantage late in the game when Elvis Kyei Baffour was put through by Peter Amidu. However, Baffour missed the chance to seal the game, leaving the scoreline at 1-0.
With this victory, Kotoko continues their unbeaten start to the season and moves to the top of the league after five games. The team will look to extend their form when they face Legon Cities in their next match, scheduled for October 12.
