Lamlaoui Brace Guides Morocco to Third CHAN Title
Morocco were crowned champions of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) for a record third time after defeating Madagascar 3-2 in a dramatic final at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Saturday.
The Atlas Lions, winners in 2018 and 2020, had to come from behind against a spirited Malagasy side who were playing in their first-ever continental final.
Oussama Lamlaoui proved the difference, scoring twice including a spectacular long-range strike to finish as the tournament’s top scorer with six goals.
Madagascar Strike First, Morocco Respond
The game opened at a frantic pace with Madagascar drawing first blood. Toky Rakotondraibe took advantage of hesitant Moroccan defending midway through the first half to fire his team ahead, sparking wild celebrations among their supporters.
Morocco, however, responded quickly. Youssef Mehri slipped a clever pass into the path of Lamlaoui, who levelled with a sharp poacher’s finish. Just before the break, Morocco went in front when Sabir Bougrine drilled home after another precise set-up from Mehri.
Malagasy Fightback
Madagascar showed great resolve in the second half and found a way back into the game. Lalaina Rafanomezantsoa, their creative spark throughout the tournament, produced a tidy finish to make it 2-2 and set up a tense finale.
But the night belonged to Lamlaoui. Spotting goalkeeper Michel Ramandimbisoa off his line, the striker unleashed an audacious 40-yard strike that flew into the net, a goal worthy of winning any final.
Holding on for history
Madagascar threw everything forward in the dying minutes, forcing two late corners, but Morocco’s experience carried them through to claim their third CHAN crown in six years.
Different Emotions
Morocco walked away with gold medals and $3.5 million in prize money, their consistency and firepower once again proving decisive on the African stage. For Madagascar, it was heartbreak at the final hurdle, but also a proud moment.
In only their second CHAN appearance, they became the first island nation to reach a CAF senior final, earning $1.2 million and the respect of fans across the continent.
As fireworks lit up the Nairobi sky to close PAMOJA 2024, Morocco celebrated another chapter of dominance, while Madagascar left with the belief that their story is only just beginning.
