Morocco Vs Senegal: Heavyweights Set for Historic Semi-Final Clash in CHAN 2024

Tuesday in Kampala will witness a first-ever African Nations Championship (CHAN) showdown between Morocco and Senegal, bringing together the winners of the last three editions. Morocco, champions in 2018 and 2020, face defending champions Senegal in what promises to be a battle of pedigree and resilience.

Morocco arrive with momentum, having won all four matches so far, including a narrow 1-0 victory over Tanzania in the quarterfinals. Their record against West African opponents is impressive—five straight wins since 2016, with 17 goals scored and only seven conceded.

Star forward Oussama Lamloui has been key, scoring in three consecutive games, while playmaker Youssef Mehri leads the tournament in assists and chances created. Another win would secure Morocco’s third CHAN final appearance in six years, underlining their dominance in the competition’s modern era.

Senegal, meanwhile, have thrived on defensive solidity. The defending champions edged Uganda 1-0 to book their third semi-final, conceding just once in the tournament. They are unbeaten in eight CHAN matches and have not lost a knockout tie in open play since 2009.

Though goals have been scarce—just three so far—Marc Diouf’s goalkeeping heroics and their ability to grind out narrow wins keep them within touching distance of back-to-back finals.

With Morocco’s attacking flair clashing against Senegal’s defensive discipline, the semi-final offers a classic contest of styles. One will advance to cement their place in CHAN history; the other will see their title pursuit end just short.
