The Round of 16 in the MTN FA Cup saw major surprises, as top-tier clubs Hearts of Oak and Medeama SC were eliminated, while Berekum Chelsea delivered an emphatic performance to secure their quarterfinal spot.
Hearts of Oak fell to Division One side Golden Kick in a dramatic penalty shootout, losing 4-3 after a goalless draw in regulation time. The Phobians, returning from a 22-day break due to the league suspension following the Nsoatre tragedy, struggled to find their rhythm. Adding to their woes, midfielder Theophilus Collison was sent off in the second half.
Medeama SC also suffered a shocking exit, losing 4-2 on penalties to Division One’s PAC Academy after a 1-1 draw at Tarkwa TNA Park. Despite playing at home, Medeama failed to capitalize on their advantage, allowing PAC Academy to claim a famous victory.
Meanwhile, Berekum Chelsea showcased their strength with a dominant 4-1 win over Northern City, comfortably advancing to the next stage. Bechem United battled to a hard-fought win over Techiman Liberty, while True Democracy edged past Nania on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Karela United also progressed by defeating Young Apostles.
With several Premier League teams eliminated, the MTN FA Cup remains wide open, promising more excitement in the upcoming rounds.
