On March 8, 2024, the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra, erupted in a kaleidoscope of color and vibrancy as the opening ceremony of the 13th African Games was held to officially kick-start the games. This marked a historic occasion; the first time the nation has taken center stage for this prestigious continental sporting event.

The event showcased the rich cultural diversity and vibrant spirit of Ghana. There was a potent blend of artistic expression and speeches. The participating countries made a symbolic grand entrance, one after the other, showcasing their rich culture.

Athletes from 52 African countries paraded into the stadium, waving their national flags and displaying the spirit of camaraderie that defines the African Games. The crowd erupted in cheers as each delegation entered, underscoring the sense of pride and solidarity felt throughout the continent.

The President of Ghana was in attendance and addressed the gathering. In his remarks, he said “Sports has the power to bring people of diverse cultures and backgrounds together, and it is heart-warming to witness the unity of Africa through sports. To the athletes…I urge you to confidently step onto this stage and showcase the power of sports’’.

The Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Mustapha Ussif, expressed his excitement at Ghana’s infrastructural development in sports.

“Today, thanks to the 13th African Games, courtesy of His Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo, Ghana can boast of the finest multi-sporting discipline facilities in the sub-region. These facilities will continue to be useful not only to Ghana but to the entire sub-region for training and competition purposes. We are privileged and ready to deliver unforgettable Games to Africa and the rest of the world.”

The opening ceremony was a visual extravaganza, featuring captivating performances by some of Africa’s top musical talents. Shata Wale, the renowned Ghanaian dancehall artist, electrified the audience with his high-energy performance, setting the tone for an unforgettable evening. His infectious beats and charismatic stage presence had spectators on their feet, dancing and singing along to his hits.

King Promise took his turn to entertain spectators. The ‘Terminator’ hitmaker, thrilled spectators with his energetic performance which was met with thunderous applause as fans swayed to the rhythm of his music, creating an atmosphere of joy and celebration.

Adding to the excitement, South African sensation Kamalo Mphela brought her unique blend of dance and music to the stage, captivating the audience with her dancing moves as she sang.

The ceremony set the stage for two weeks of intense competition and celebration of African unity through sports, and with athletes poised to compete across a wide range of disciplines, the stage is set for inspiring performances, and moments of triumph that will resonate across the continent for years to come.
