Police Ladies Reignite Hopes with Convincing Win Over Sam Nelly
Ghana’s Police Ladies reignited their hopes of progressing in the CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU B qualifiers after brushing aside Benin’s Sam Nelly FC with a 3–1 victory in Group B.
Needing a response after their disappointing opening-day loss to Bayelsa Queens, the Ghanaian side wasted no time asserting themselves.
A moment of composure from Grace Animah settled early nerves, as she converted a penalty in the 14th minute to hand Police Ladies the lead.
Confidence surged from there, and within 11 minutes the scoreline doubled. Sarah Nyarko latched onto a chance inside the box and fired home in the 25th minute, putting her team firmly in the driver’s seat.
After the interval, Police Ladies continued to dictate play, stretching Sam Nelly across the pitch. The pressure finally told in the 68th minute when Deborah Afriyie struck with precision to make it 3–0, effectively killing off the contest.
Sam Nelly, however, found a consolation late in the game through Yenido Gandonou, who celebrated wildly and was booked for removing her shirt.
The goal, in the 81st minute, proved too little too late as the Ghanaians held on for a crucial win.
The result not only restores belief within the Police Ladies camp but also keeps their qualification hopes alive heading into the final group fixtures.
Sarah Nyarko’s all-action display earned her the Woman of the Match award, a fitting recognition for her tireless performance and vital goal.
