Farida Iddriss Gindo, a council member of World Swimming, has lamented the lack of government support for swimming in Ghana, stating that the sport has been left solely to its federation without adequate funding from the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.

Speaking at the JoySports National Dialogue 2025, Gindo emphasized the struggles faced by the sport, despite its potential to grow and produce world-class athletes.

Swimming has been left solely to the federation. We hardly get any funding from the ministry. She stated, expressing her deep concern over the neglect of the sport.

According to her, the federation has been able to sustain swimming activities in the country through self-generated funds, external support, and scholarships from the international swimming body.

However, she believes government intervention is crucial to expanding the sport and providing better opportunities for young Ghanaian swimmers.

“The issue of swimming is very dear to me,” she added, calling for a structured approach to investing in the sport at both grassroots and professional levels.
