Nigeria pulled off a sensational second-half comeback to defeat hosts Morocco 3-2 and clinch their record-extending 10th CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title on Saturday night in Rabat.
Trailing 2-0 at the break, the Super Falcons displayed true grit and experience, storming back with goals from Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi, and a late winner from Joe Echegini to silence the home crowd and break Moroccan hearts.
Morocco had raced into a strong lead with goals from captain Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanaâ Mssoudy in the first 25 minutes, thrilling a packed Stade Olympique hoping for a historic home triumph.
But Nigeria flipped the script in the second half. Okoronkwo converted a penalty after a VAR-reviewed handball, then set up Ijamilusi to level the match. With minutes remaining, Echegini netted the winner from a clever set-piece, capping off a dramatic turnaround.
Despite Morocco’s late surge, Nigeria held on to reaffirm their dominance in African women’s football and deny the hosts their maiden title.
