2024/25 Ghana Premier League Season Set to Kick Off with Exciting Opening Day Fixtures: Preview of Matchday 1
The Ghana Premier League is set to return with a thrilling opening weekend, promising fans a blend of high-stakes encounters and exciting football action. The BAC Sports team previews all the actions on Matchday 1.
The 2024/25 season will officially commence on Saturday, September 7, with two intriguing matches scheduled to get the ball rolling. The defending champions, FC Samartex 1996, will start their title defense with an away fixture against Dreams FC.
Coming off a successful preseason and a notable victory over Cameroon’s Victoria United in the CAF Champions League Preliminary stage, Samartex is entering the new season with significant confidence. The match, to be officiated by referee Rastum Senorgbe, is set for a 3pm kickoff. FC Samartex will look to carry forward their strong form into the league and make an early statement in their quest to retain the title, having bolstered their squad ahead of the season.
In another fixture on Saturday, Vision FC will make their Ghana Premier League debut with a home game against former league champions Berekum Chelsea. The encounter will take place at the Nii Okraku II Sports Complex, also scheduled for a 3pm kickoff.
Vision FC, guided by head coach Nana Kweku Agyemang, enters the league with high hopes after a robust preseason which includes winning the 2024 Division One League Super Cup. Referee Selorm Yao Bless will oversee this historic match for the debutants.
Sunday’s Action: A Full Slate of Matches
The excitement continues on Sunday, September 8, with seven matches scheduled, all set to kick off at 3pm, except for the Medeama vs. Accra Lions game, which will be played under the lights at 6pm at the newly constructed TnA Stadium in Tarkwa.
Accra Hearts of Oak will start their season by hosting Basake Holy Stars at the Accra Sports Stadium. The Phobians, who struggled last season, have undergone significant squad changes and will be eager to start the new campaign positively. Basake Holy Stars, making their debut in the league, will aim to surprise their hosts and fancy their chances against a side that laboured for survival last season and kick off their maiden season on a high note.
At the Nana Agyemang Badu II Park in Dormaa, two-time GPL champions Aduana Stars will face off against Kpando-based Hearts of Lions. With referee Nkuenyenutsu in charge, Aduana Stars will seek to leverage their home advantage to start their season with a win.
Asante Kotoko will travel to the Naa Sheriga Sports Centre in Nalerigu to face Karela United. Kotoko, who won this fixture 2-0 last season, will be buoyed by new signings like Emmanuel Antwi and Albert Amoah, despite letting go of 21 players in the transfer window. The Porcupines will be keen to build on their recent form and make a strong start to the season.
Bibiani Goldstars will host Legon Cities at the Duns Park in Bibiani. Both teams will be aiming to start their campaigns with a solid performance and secure valuable points early in the season.
Also Nations FC, who impressed last season with a top-four finish, will welcome Bechem United to the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex at Abrankese. Nations FC will look to continue their strong form from the previous season and make a statement against Bechem United.
The final fixture of the 3pm kickoffs will see 2023/24 MTN FA Cup winners Nsoatreman take on Young Apostles, who are also making their first appearance in the GPL. Nsoatreman will be eager to start the season with a win and build on their recent FA Cup success.
