Ghana head coach Otto Addo has praised the standout performances of several young players during the 2025 Unity Cup, admitting that their displays have made his selection process more challenging as preparations begin for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in September.
Reflecting on the team’s performances across two matches, a spirited display against Nigeria and a win over Trinidad and Tobago, Addo acknowledged the depth of talent within Ghana’s ranks and the value of the Unity Cup as a platform for emerging players.
The challenge is on. A lot of players showed that they can compete at the highest level, and this makes my work hard. But this is how we want it. You can see that in Ghana there is a lot of talent, and I am happy to give them the chance in this tournament.
Addo noted that the competition has complicated selection decisions for upcoming qualifiers, with several players now under serious consideration for inclusion in the squad.
We really have to think about how to include one, two or three players. I don’t know, let’s see. We will still observe them, he added. How they perform with their clubs will also decide in the end for September.
While expressing pride in the team’s recent displays, Addo stressed the importance of ongoing player monitoring and the need for the squad to recharge.
I am happy for them to have holidays now. They should rest to start fresh, he said. Surely how they perform with their clubs will help us make final decisions.
With Ghana set to face Chad and Mali in September’s World Cup qualifiers, Addo’s focus now shifts to balancing experienced players with promising new talent
