Asante Kotoko have strengthened their squad ahead of the new season with the signing of highly-rated right-back Shayibu Abubakari on a three-year deal. The 21-year-old becomes the Porcupine Warriors’ tenth addition in what has been an eventful transfer window.
Abubakari, who completed his medical earlier this week, joins from Karela United and brings pace, versatility, and competition to Kotoko’s defensive setup. A familiar face in the Ghana Premier League, he previously featured for Real Tamale United and had a brief international spell with Czech side FK Mlada Boleslav.
Highly regarded for his forward surges and ability to operate as both a right-back and winger, Abubakari is expected to fit seamlessly into Coach Karim Zito’s system.
This is a big step in my career, I’m looking forward to learning from senior players like Lord Amoah and doing my best to help the team achieve its goals, both domestically and in Africa.
His arrival comes at a key moment, especially with first-choice right-back Emmanuel Kotei sidelined due to an ACL injury. Abubakari adds much-needed depth to the squad as the club prepares for its CAF Confederation Cup journey.
He joins a growing list of new recruits, including Johnson Oppong, Francis Acquah, and Zakariah Fusseni, highlighting Kotoko’s ambition to mount a serious challenge this season.
The team will continue its preparations with a pre-season tour of South Africa, where they will compete in the Kaizer Chiefs Cup. Fans will be eager to see how the revamped squad performs ahead of the competitive season.
