CHAN 2024: Kwesi Appiah’s Sudan Demolish Nigeria to Go Top of Group D
Former Black Stars head coach, James Kwesi Appiah, masterminded a stunning 4-0 victory for Sudan over Nigeria in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) currently taking place across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
Nigeria, desperate for a win after losing their opening Group D fixture to Senegal, saw their hopes of survival dashed in emphatic fashion.
The Super Eagles thought they had taken the lead in the 22nd minute when Anthony Ijoma found the net, but VAR ruled the effort out for offside.
Just three minutes later, Sudan took full advantage, with 17-year-old Leonard Ngenge’s attempted clearance ending up in his own net.
Sudan doubled their advantage on the stroke of halftime as Walieldin Khidir calmly converted from the penalty spot, sending Kwesi Appiah’s men into the break with a commanding 2-0 lead.
Abdelrazig Omer put the result beyond doubt in the second half, netting twice in quick succession in the 55th and 62nd minutes to seal a statement win for the East Africans.
The heavy defeat leaves Nigeria bottom of Group D with zero points, officially eliminating them from the competition. Their final group match will now be a dead rubber.
Sudan, meanwhile, move to the top of the table on four points, edging Senegal on goal difference. The two sides are now favourites to advance to the knockout stage.
