Xabi Alonso has silenced speculation about his future by committing to remain at Bayer Leverkusen.
The Spanish manager, who has impressed in his first full-time managerial role, was linked with high-profile vacancies at Liverpool and Bayern Munich.
Alonso, a legend in his playing days, is focused on building upon his success with Leverkusen.
In his pre-match press conference today, Alonso confirmed his stay at Bayer Leverkusen. “It’s not time to decide my future, I want to develop at Bayer Leverkusen,” he declared.
This statement highlights his commitment to the project he’s building at the BayArena where he has set a record of 38 games without defeat in all competitions this season.
The 41-year-old enjoyed a stellar playing career, winning trophies with Liverpool, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid.
His transition to management has been promising. He took over a struggling Leverkusen side in December 2022 and guided them to a strong finish in the Bundesliga last term.
Currently, they are in a good position to claim the title from Bayern Munich with nine games to go having opened a 10-point gap.
This impressive form naturally attracted the attention of European giants. Both Liverpool and Bayern Munich were searching for new managers after Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel announced that they will be leaving their respective roles as the end of the season.
This made Alonso to be strongly linked to the Liverpool and Bayern Munich job.
However, Alonso has chosen stability over managing one of Europe’s biggest football clubs.
