Maurizio Sarri has revealed a major regret in his managerial career, admitting that departing Chelsea after just one season was a significant misstep.

In an interview with Sky Italia, the Italian coach acknowledged that he made a “big mistake” by leaving Stamford Bridge in 2019. “Leaving Chelsea has been my biggest mistake,” Sarri confessed. “There was a good basis to stay there and continue at the club.”

Despite guiding Chelsea to a Europa League glory in his only season at the helm, Sarri’s tenure was not without its challenges.

His tactical approach and communication style faced criticism from some sections of the fanbase. However, Sarri now emphasizes the positive aspects of his time in London.

“We won the Europa League, the project was great,” he said.

However, a desire to return to his homeland ultimately proved to be the deciding factor. “I wanted to return to Italy, unfortunately,” Sarri concluded.

Following his Chelsea exit, Sarri went on to manage Juventus for one season before a recent stint at Lazio.

His comments regarding his time at Chelsea suggest that he may still hold a special place in his heart for the London club and the missed opportunities that came with his departure.
