Leverkusen’s Unbeaten Run Ends at the Hands of Leipzig

Bayer Leverkusen’s impressive domestic unbeaten streak came to an abrupt end on Saturday as they suffered a 3-2 defeat to RB Leipzig at the BayArena.

The 2023/24 Bundesliga champions had gone an astonishing 35 league games without a loss, a run that stretched back to the previous season. Their undefeated record played a crucial role in ending Bayern Munich’s 11-year dominance of the German top flight.

They nearly went the season undefeated across all competitions until they met Italian side, Atalanta in the UEFA Europa League final where they lost 3-0.

Although they narrowly missed out on a perfect season, Leverkusen started the 2024-25 campaign on a positive note winning the German Super Cup against Stuttgart before securing a late 3-2 win over Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga.

However, their unbeaten streak has finally been ended by a resilient RB Leipzig side.

Leverkusen looked on course for victory in their Matchday 2 encounter after taking a comfortable 2-0 lead through Dutch international, Jeremy Frimpong and Spanish defender, Alejandro Grimaldo.

But Leipzig staged a remarkable comeback, with Kevin Kampl and Lois Openda finding the net to level the score.

Openda scored his second goal of the match and Leipzig’s third to seal the win for Leipzig, who inflicted a long-awaited defeat on the Bundesliga champions.
