Karim Benzema Expresses Disappointment Over Vinicius’ Ballon d’Or Snub
Karim Benzema, former Real Madrid star, shared his thoughts on Vinicius Jr.’s Ballon d’Or snub after Manchester City midfielder Rodri won the prestigious award.
Speaking with El Chiringuito TV, Benzema revealed that he had spoken with Vinicius, who felt disappointed after being widely regarded as a frontrunner for the title.
Benzema, now playing for Al Ittihad in Saudi Arabia, voiced his admiration for Vinicius, expressing that his achievements and style of play merited the award. “I spoke to Vini, he’s sad… it’s also normal. He deserved to win the Ballon d’Or,” Benzema said, showing his support for his former teammate.
The 2024 Ballon d’Or, awarded to Rodri after his stellar season with Manchester City and Spain, sparked debate, especially among fans and former players like Benzema.
While acknowledging Rodri’s talents, Benzema admitted he wasn’t convinced, adding, “I’ve nothing against Rodri, good player… but I’m in my sofa watching TV, and Rodri doesn’t do anything that makes you say, wow!”
Benzema’s comments reflect a sentiment among some fans and players who felt Vinicius’s impact at Real Madrid last season was worthy of Ballon d’Or recognition.
Despite Rodri’s impressive achievements, including the Premier League, Euro 2024, and UEFA Super Cup victories, Benzema believes Vinicius’s unique flair and influence on the field set him apart in the race for the top individual honour.
