CHAN Qualifiers: Black Galaxies Held to Stalemate by Nigeria in Accra
Ghana’s Black Galaxies were unable to capitalize on home advantage as they played out a 0-0 draw with Nigeria in the first leg of the 2024 CHAN Qualifiers at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, December 22.
A tense and tactical affair saw both teams cancel each other out in a game where chances were few and far between. The result leaves the tie delicately balanced ahead of the decisive second leg in Uyo, Nigeria, on Saturday, December 28.
The match began in front of an optimistic home crowd, with Ghana’s supporters hoping their team could gain an edge in this crucial tie. However, a cautious first half saw both sides prioritize defensive solidity over attacking risks, leading to a 0-0 halftime scoreline.
Ghana’s defensive line, marshaled by Razak Simpson of Nations FC, was a highlight. Simpson’s composure and ability to initiate attacks from the back provided a sense of security for the Black Galaxies.
In attack, Albert Amoah of Asante Kotoko impressed with his creativity, threading dangerous passes and carrying the ball forward with purpose. Yet, Ghana struggled to break down a disciplined Nigerian defence.
The second half brought renewed urgency and moments of drama. Nigeria came closest to breaking the deadlock when a thunderous strike beat goalkeeper Richard Mensah but rattled the crossbar.
For Ghana, Albert Amoah continued to create opportunities, sending a perfectly weighted pass to Jerry Afriyie, whose effort failed to trouble the Nigerian goalkeeper.
As the minutes ticked away, the Black Galaxies pushed for a winner, but a combination of missed chances and resolute defending from the visitors kept the game goalless.
The result means Ghana faces a challenging task in the return leg at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo. With away goals in play, the Black Galaxies must win outright or secure a scoring draw to book their ticket to the 2024 CHAN tournament in East Africa.
Despite the frustration of missed opportunities, the team will take solace in their defensive resilience and hope to improve their efficiency in front of goal in the second leg. The stage is set for an intense showdown as both teams vie for a place in the prestigious tournament.
