Former Black Stars striker Kwesi Appiah believes Ghana has yet to find a suitable replacement for Asamoah Gyan following the legendary forward’s retirement.

Gyan, Ghana’s all-time top scorer, left a significant legacy, and Appiah, who played alongside him during the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, understands the challenge of filling such a void.

“Replacing someone of his calibre and quality is a very tough task. A striker and leader like him doesn’t come around often,” Appiah told Flashscore.

The 34-year-old acknowledged the potential of players like Mohammed Kudus and Antoine Semenyo, who have shown promise with their respective clubs. However, he stressed that consistency will be key in their development.

“Right now, players like Kudus and potentially Semenyo are performing well for their clubs. We hope they can maintain that level of play and consistency for Ghana to lead the team to success, just as Gyan did so often.”

In recent years, Ghana has struggled to establish a consistent attacking force, with the absence of a reliable goal-scorer evident in their performances. Appiah, now playing for Boreham Wood in England’s National League, believes that strong leadership and team cohesion are essential for the Black Stars to succeed.

The search for a new talisman continues, and Ghana will be hopeful that one of their emerging stars can replicate Gyan’s impact on the international stage.
