AFCON 2025Q: Burkina Faso Beat Burundi to Book Early Ticket to Morocco
The Stallions of Burkina Faso have become the first team to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, following a 2-0 victory over Burundi.
With this result, Burkina Faso joins host nation Morocco as the first teams to secure their places in the tournament finals.
Burkina Faso took control early in the match, with Mohamed Konate finding the back of the net just five minutes in. The game remained competitive, but the Stallions sealed the victory with a late penalty converted by Bertrand Traoré.
This win gives Burkina Faso 10 points from four matches, with three wins and one draw, putting them ahead of Senegal, who sit on seven points in Group L. Burundi, with only three points and two games remaining, are now mathematically out of the qualification race.
Even if the Stallions lose their last two matches and Burundi win theirs, it will not be enough to surpass Burkina Faso’s 10 points.
Senegal, with their 7 points, can also secure their spot in Morocco if they defeat Malawi on Tuesday, October 15. Malawi, languishing at the bottom of the group with zero points from three games, will face a tough challenge.
Burkina Faso’s strong performances have earned them an early ticket to the AFCON 2025 finals, where they will aim to make a significant impact on the continental stage once again.
