Aryna Sabalenka Clinches Cincinnati Open Title, Her First Since Australian Open Triumph
Aryna Sabalenka powered her way to victory at the Cincinnati Open, capturing her first title since her Australian Open triumph in January.
The Belarusian star showcased her dominance by defeating American Jessica Pegula in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, in a final that lasted just 76 minutes. This victory marks the 15th title of Sabalenka’s career and her sixth at the prestigious WTA 1,000 level.
Sabalenka’s path to the title was nothing short of impressive. She did not drop a single set throughout the tournament, a testament to her formidable form and resilience, particularly given her recent challenges.
The Cincinnati Open win is especially significant for Sabalenka, who had to overcome a shoulder injury that forced her to miss Wimbledon earlier this year. Reflecting on her victory, she expressed deep satisfaction, saying, “This trophy means a lot, it is a really big achievement, especially coming after injury, with this fear of getting injured again.”
The 26-year-old was quick to credit her team for their unwavering support during her recovery. “My team did everything they could to make sure I felt as good as I can, and I am proud of myself that I was able to handle all of those emotions,” she shared in a courtside interview broadcast by Sky Sports.
The final saw Sabalenka break Pegula’s serve early in the first set, gaining a crucial advantage that she held onto to secure a 6-3 win.
The second set proved more challenging. Serving for the title at 5-4, Sabalenka faced a determined Pegula, who broke back to level the set. However, Sabalenka quickly regained her composure, breaking Pegula’s serve once more before serving out the match.
Her celebration was marked by blowing kisses to the crowd, a gesture of gratitude for their support.
This victory not only ended Pegula’s impressive nine-match winning streak, which included a successful defense of her Canadian Open title last week, but also solidified Sabalenka’s status as one of the top players in women’s tennis.
Sabalenka’s next challenge awaits at the US Open, which begins on 26th August. After defeating world number one Iga Swiatek in the semi-final, Sabalenka enters the final Grand Slam of the year with momentum on her side and the confidence of a champion.
