Black Satellites Seal Top Spot in Group A after draw against Togo in the WAFU B U20 Championship
Ghana’s U20 national team, the Black Satellites, secured a place in the semifinals of the WAFU B U20 Championship after a 1-1 draw against Togo in their final Group A game.
This result sees the Satellites top the group with five points from three matches, advancing to the knockout stage in the strongest position.
The WAFU B U20 Championship serves as the qualifier for the 2025 Africa U20 Cup of Nations, with only the two finalists earning tickets to the continental tournament. Ghana, as group leaders, will now face the runners-up from Group B in the semifinals.
In the match against Togo at the Stade de Kégué, both teams fought for control, but neither could find a decisive breakthrough after trading goals. The Black Satellites’ consistency throughout the group stage, where they remained unbeaten, has positioned them well for the next phase of the competition.
Joining Ghana in the semifinals from Group A is Niger, who narrowly defeated Benin 1-0 in the other group match. This result sees Benin and hosts Togo eliminated from the tournament, with Niger advancing in second place.
The Black Satellites will now await the outcome of Group B’s final matches on Thursday, October 24, 2024. Group B remains tightly contested, with Cote d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, and Nigeria all vying for the remaining semifinal spots.
The semifinals of the sub-regional championship are set for Sunday, October 27, 2024, with Ghana eager to continue their quest for the title and secure a place at the Africa U20 Cup of Nations.
