Black Stars Struggle Continues as Niger Denies Vital Win in AFCON Qualifiers

Ghana’s Black Stars were left frustrated after being held to a 1-1 draw by Niger in their second match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The game, played at the Municipal Sports Complex, saw the Black Stars miss out on a crucial win as their qualification campaign continues to stutter.

Following a 1-0 loss to Angola in their opening group match, Ghana entered the encounter needing a victory to reignite their hopes of qualification.

Head coach Otto Addo opted for a strong attacking lineup, hoping to break the winless streak and secure all three points at home.

The first half saw Ghana take control of the game, with their efforts paying off just before halftime. In the 44th minute, Alidu Seidu found the back of the net, hitting a belter that knuckled over the Nigerien goalie to give the Black Stars a much-needed lead. Ghana appeared to be in the driving seat as they headed into the break with a 1-0 advantage.

However, Niger came out stronger in the second half, showing resilience and determination. Despite Ghana’s offensive firepower, Niger held firm, and in the 81st minute, they found an equalizer. Oumar Sako’s strike leveled the game, leaving the Black Stars unable to restore their lead as the match ended 1-1.

The result leaves Ghana winless after two matches in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, with only one point to show for their efforts during the September international break.

With their qualification hopes now hanging in the balance, the Black Stars will need to regroup and find form in the upcoming matches if they are to secure a place in the tournament.
