The Ghana Football Association has stated that Chris Hughton has been dismissed from his position as head coach of the Black Stars.
This decision comes after Ghana’s unsuccessful 2023 Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Ivory Coast.
The team’s failure to secure a win at the tournament led to their abrupt exit. In their final Group B match against Mozambique, on Monday, January 22, Ghana needed a win but ended up conceding two goals in added time, resulting in a 2-2 draw and their elimination from the competition.
A statement from the GFA reads, “The Ghana Football Association wishes to announce that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior National team with immediate effect.”
The statement also noted, “The Executive Council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars. The Ghana Football Association will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars.”
Chris Hughton took on the role of Ghana head coach in March 2023 following a year as a Technical Advisor. Over the course of almost a year as Ghana’s coach, he played 13 games, securing four wins, five draws, and losing four times.
The Black Stars have failed to secure a victory in two previous AFCON campaigns, both in 2022 in Cameroon and now 2023, in Ivory Coast.
