The Chief Executive of The Business Africa Consulting Group (The BAC Group), Dr. Ernest Koranteng, has issued a strong caution to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and its President, Kurt Okraku, over proposed amendments that could extend the tenure of the GFA presidency.
During Ghana football’s Normalization period, the Normalization Committee introduced a two-term limit for the GFA President. However, the current administration has identified a loophole in the statutes that could allow for an extended stay, a move Dr. Koranteng believes would be a grave misstep.
Speaking on Sports Station on TV3, Dr. Koranteng described the proposed amendment as a “slippery ground” that could compromise the integrity and credibility of leadership within Ghanaian football.
“There’s a bait, and this is where I want to appeal to Kurt — that it’s a slippery ground,” he warned. “There’s a provision that’s going to be rubber-stamped on the 12th of August, that the president can extend his term of office. I don’t know what the extra four years, added to the two years that the incumbent GFA President has, will do.”
Dr. Koranteng, who is also known for his longstanding contributions to sports media and governance, further advised Kurt Okraku to consider leaving office while his public reputation remains intact.
“There’s wisdom in stepping down when the applause is loudest,” he added. “The tendency to overstay can easily overshadow the achievements made so far.”
The remarks come ahead of the GFA’s Ordinary Congress on August 12, where stakeholders will vote on key constitutional amendments — including the tenure extension clause, which has already stirred considerable debate across the football landscape.
Dr. Koranteng’s comments have added to the growing public scrutiny surrounding the GFA’s governance structure, as many call for greater transparency, accountability, and respect for term limits.
