Former Black Stars and Asante Kotoko striker, Eric Bekoe, has stressed the need for a solid foundation in youth football development in Ghana, warning that the current generation of young players is missing out on the essential early training needed for long-term success.
In an exclusive interview with 3Sports, Bekoe highlighted the importance of the Ghana Premier League (GPL) in shaping the future of the national teams. According to him, a strong and competitive local league positively impacts the performance and depth of the national sides.
When the Ghana Premier League is in good shape, it has a huge impact on the national teams, Bekoe stated.
He recalled how, during his playing days, the GPL produced talents that could match those in top European clubs, creating healthy competition for national team selection.
Bekoe also applauded current Black Stars coach Otto Addo and his technical team for integrating local-based players into the national setup. He specifically mentioned Razack Simpson of Nations FC and Benjamin Asare of Hearts of Oak as commendable inclusions.
I expect to see more local players in the national teams, he added, urging the technical handlers to continue scouting and giving opportunities to home-based talents.
