Football Fraternity Bids Farewell to Victims of August 6 Helicopter Crash
The Ghana Football Association (GFA), led by President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, joined the nation on Friday, August 15, 2025, to pay their final respects to the eight distinguished Ghanaians who perished in the August 6 helicopter crash.
The solemn state funeral at Independence Square in Accra drew a large gathering, including President John Mahama, Vice-President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, government officials, security service representatives, and members of various professional bodies.
The air was thick with grief as mourners from across the country came together to honour the memory of the fallen.
President Simeon-Okraku, accompanied by General Secretary Prosper Harrison Addo, senior FA executives, staff, and club officials, expressed the football fraternity’s solidarity with the bereaved families. The GFA’s presence underscored the sport’s role as a unifying force in moments of national sorrow.
A day earlier, on August 14, the GFA President led the Executive Council, FA staff, and club representatives to lay a wreath at the Jubilee House gardens in tribute to the victims.
The helicopter crash stands as one of Ghana’s most devastating recent tragedies, leaving an irreplaceable void in the nation’s heart. Friday’s service was not only a farewell but also a poignant display of unity and collective mourning.
