The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially launched the fifth edition of the KGL Foundation Inter-regional U-17 Colts Championship, reaffirming its commitment to grassroots football development and youth talent discovery across the country.
The launch event, which marked the beginning of another exciting season of competitive youth football, was attended by GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, members of the Executive Council, top officials from the KGL Foundation, Chairmen of the ten Regional Football Associations, and representatives from various colts clubs.
Launched in 2021, the championship has grown to become a significant platform for scouting and nurturing young football talents. It aims to promote regional unity, encourage youth development, and create a pathway for players from district-level football to the national stage.
Over the past four editions, the tournament has witnessed impressive growth and intense competition. MAL FC clinched the title in the inaugural edition, followed by Great Corinthians in 2022. In 2023, the Ashanti Region’s U-17 team made history by becoming the first regional team to win the championship. Last year, the Western Region triumphed over Eastern Region with a 2-1 win in the final, held at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.
The championship not only offers young players a chance to showcase their skills but also serves as a talent pool for national youth teams. The ten Regional Football Associations are responsible for selecting the best U-17 players from local colts competitions to represent their regions.
