GFA must be blamed for Black Stars AFCON qualification failure – George Alhassan
Former Ghana international, George Alhassan has blamed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
For the first time in 21 years, the four-time African champions will not participate in the continent’s most prestigious football tournament that will be hosted in Morocco next year.
Ghana needed to win against Angola in their Matchday five game after Niger handed them a lifeline by defeating Sudan 4-0.
However, Otto Addo and his charges were held to a 1-1 draw against the Palancras Negras on Friday at the Estádio 11 de Novembro which leave Ghana at the 4th spot in Group F with just three points.
Reacting to the team’s failure to qualify for the AFCON tournament, Alhassan, who won the 1978 AFCON with the Black Stars insists the country’s football governing body must be blamed since they were responsible for bringing in Otto Addo as Black Stars coach.
“It was the Ghana Football Association (GFA) who brought in Otto Addo so if we should blame him [Otto Addo], then the GFA must also be blamed because they brought him,” he told Adom TV’s Sports Arena.
“Otto Addo coached the team at the World Cup and left the team after our elimination and the GFA decided to bring him back so who do you blame in this case? It is the GFA because they brought Otto Addo to coach the team,” he added.
Ghana meanwhile will wrap up their qualifiers with a home game against Niger on Monday at the Accra Sports Stadium with kick-off scheduled at 16:00 GMT.
