Hearts of Oak Legend Amankwah Mireku Weighs in on Ghana Premier League Standards and Current Hearts Team

Former Hearts of Oak captain and club legend, Amankwah Mireku, has expressed concerns about the overall standard of the Ghana Premier League (GPL) while defending the current coaching setup of the Accra-based club.

Speaking after Hearts of Oak’s 2-0 victory over Bechem United at the University of Ghana stadium yesterday, Mireku voiced his opinion on the state of the GPL and the Hearts of Oak squad.

Mireku, one of the fans’ favorite during his playing days, emphasized that the coaching staff should not bear the brunt of criticism regarding the team’s recent underwhelming performances. Instead, he urged the players to step up and improve their game.

“I don’t see anything wrong with the coach; the players have to improve,” he said, speaking to reporters after the match. His comments come at a time when many Hearts of Oak supporters have been critical of the technical team following a string of inconsistent results.

Hearts of Oak secured a much-needed 2-0 win against Bechem United, but questions remain about the overall performance of the team in the league. While the win brought some relief to the Phobian faithful, Mireku believes there’s still much to be done if the team is to regain its former glory.

Beyond just his thoughts on Hearts of Oak, Mireku also highlighted a larger issue: the declining standard of the Ghana Premier League.

“The standard of the Ghana Premier League is very low,” he lamented. This statement reflects growing concerns among football analysts and fans who believe the league’s quality has dipped in recent years, impacting the development of players and the competitiveness of clubs on the continental stage.

His call for better player performance and higher standards in the league underscores the challenges that clubs like Hearts of Oak face as they try to remain competitive domestically and internationally.

As the season wears on, it remains to be seen whether Hearts of Oak will heed the advice of their legendary captain and if the players can rise to the challenge of restoring the club’s proud history. For now, Amankwah Mireku’s message is clear: it’s time for the players and the league as a whole to improve.
