Former West African Football Academy (WAFA) player, Lawrence Agyekum has announced his eligibility and readiness to play for either Ghana or Nigeria.

With a Ghanaian birthplace and a Nigerian mother, Agyekum is qualified to join the Super Eagles, a possibility he has not dismissed in a recent interview.

At 20, Agyekum began his career at WAFA, impressing enough to earn a first-team spot by 2020. He then moved to the Austrian club RedBull Salzburg two years later. Now, on a season-long loan at Cercle Brugge in the Belgian Pro League, he seeks more playing time and has participated in nine matches this season.

In a conversation with OwnGoalNigeria.com, Agyekum, a dynamic midfielder, stated his willingness to represent Nigeria despite being born in Ghana. He provided clarifications on his qualification for both national teams.

“I have a Ghanaian father and a Nigerian mother, making me eligible for both countries. It’s an aspect people might not know about me. If offered the chance to play for the Super Eagles, I will accept,” Agyekum expressed.

“I cherish both nations and hope they succeed. Ghana struggles in the AFCON qualifiers but excels in the World Cup qualifiers, whereas Nigeria’s situation is the opposite. I keep track of both.”

Agyekum hopes to be active this weekend, planning to play against Union Saint-Gilloise in what promises to be a challenging match.
