Iñaki Williams, Joseph Paintsil, and Majeed Ashimeru Return to Black Stars Squad for AFCON Qualifiers
Ghana’s head coach, Otto Addo, has announced the Black Stars squad for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, with notable recalls for Iñaki Williams, Joseph Paintsil, and Majeed Ashimeru.
The trio, who missed out on the June fixtures against Mali and Central African Republic in the World Cup qualifiers have been brought back to strengthen the team ahead of crucial matches against Angola and Niger.
Athletic Club forward Iñaki Williams, known for his pace and clinical finishing, is expected to add firepower to Ghana’s attack.
Joseph Paintsil, who has been in excellent form in the USA with LA Galaxy, brings creativity and speed to the wings, while Majeed Ashimeru’s return offers more options in midfield, with his ability to dictate play and support both defense and attack.
Only one locally based player was called up. Asante Kotoko goalkeeper, Frederick Asare maintains his place in the squad.
However, the squad announcement also includes some notable exclusions. Atalanta’s Ibrahim Sulemana and Salis Ahmed of RC Lens have been left out of the lineup. Additionally, Lyon’s rising star Ernest Nuamah misses out due to a recent injury, which will keep him sidelined for these crucial qualifiers.
Ghana will host Angola on Thursday, September 5, at the Baba Yara Stadium, before facing Niger five days later in Morocco.
These matches are vital for the Black Stars as they aim to start on a good note for a place in the 2025 AFCON tournament which will be held in Morocco.
The return of key players like Williams, Paintsil, and Ashimeru is a positive boost for Otto Addo’s squad as they prepare for this important campaign.
