Karim Zito fires back at Kwara United coach after Kotoko’s CAF Confederation Cup triumph

Asante Kotoko head coach Karim Zito has hit out at Kwara United’s coach following the Porcupine Warriors’ 1-0 away victory in Abeokuta, which sealed their passage to the next round of the CAF Confederation Cup qualifiers.

Kotoko advanced 5-3 on aggregate thanks to Hubert Gyau’s strike on Sunday, and Zito did not hold back in his post-match comments, aiming sharp words at his opposite number.

Kwara United’s coach, who doesn’t even have a license, was talking nonsense when I beat him in Ghana,” Zito told reporters after the game. “I taught him sense by beating him again today.”

The experienced Ghanaian coach, who guided Dreams FC to a historic CAF Confederation Cup semi-final in their maiden appearance in 2023, stressed that his pedigree in continental football gives him confidence in handling big games.

I have been here before and I know what it takes. This competition requires experience, and I have shown it with Dreams FC and now with Kotoko. We are not here to joke; we are here to compete,” he added.

Kotoko’s qualification sets up a tough next-round clash with Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic, but Zito believes his side has what it takes to overcome the challenge.

We respect Wydad, but we also know our strength. Today’s victory shows that we are capable of going far in this competition,” he said.

Zito is confident and determined to restore Kotoko’s name among Africa’s elite, as the Porcupine Warriors chase a return to the group stages of the Confederation Cup for the first time in since 2019.
