Kotoko edge Kwara United in Abeokuta to advance in CAF Confederation Cup
Asante Kotoko sealed qualification to the next round of the CAF Confederation Cup qualifiers after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Nigeria’s Kwara United in Abeokuta on Sunday.
The Porcupine Warriors, who had already built a narrow advantage from the first leg in Accra, completed the job away from home with Hubert Gyau scoring the only goal of the game. The winger’s strike proved decisive, as Kotoko advanced 5-3 on aggregate.
Kwara United pressed for a way back into the tie, but Kotoko’s defense stood firm, with goalkeeper Mohamed Camara producing crucial saves to keep the Nigerians at bay. The visitors showed maturity and composure, effectively managing the game to deny Kwara any late momentum.
With the victory, the 2004 CAF Confederation Cup finalist now progress to face Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic in the next round, a stern test for the Ghanaian MTN FA Cup champions as they aim to reach the group stages of the competition for the first time in six years
The result in Abeokuta underlines Kotoko’s continental pedigree and determination to restore their name among Africa’s elite.
