Kudus’s Goal against Freiburg Receives Puskàs Nomination, Becomes Fifth Ghanaian Nominee for the Award

West Ham United and Ghana attacker, Mohammed Kudus has become the fifth Ghanaian player to earn a nomination for the prestigious FIFA Puskás Award.

Kudus joins an illustrious list of Ghanaian footballers who have previously been nominated, including Michael Essien (2009), Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu (2012), Kevin-Prince Boateng (2017), and Sandra Owusu Ansah (2021).

The Puskás Award, established in 2009, honors the most aesthetically significant goal scored in world football within the calendar year.

Kudus’s recognition celebrates one of his two goals during West Ham’s 5-1 victory over Freiburg in the UEFA Europa League last season.

The goal that earned Kudus his place on the shortlist was nothing short of spectacular.

Picking up the ball deep in his half, Kudus dribbled past opposing players as though they were non-existent with mesmerizing skill before firing a powerful low shot into the net. It was the first of his two goals in the match, highlighting his creativity and technical brilliance.

Fans and analysts alike have hailed the goal as one of the best of the season. “That goal was a masterpiece, showcasing Kudus’ exceptional ability and flair,” said a West Ham fan after the match.

A Stellar Debut Season

The 2023/24 campaign was a memorable one for Kudus, who joined West Ham from Ajax Amsterdam during the 2023 summer transfer window.

In his debut season, Kudus established himself as a key contributor to the Hammers’ success, scoring 8 times and providing 6 assists in the Premier League helping him to a second-place finish in the club’s Player of the Year Award.

His nomination for the Puskás Award adds another milestone to his growing list of achievements and cements his reputation as one of the brightest talents in African and world football.

African Representation

Kudus is one of four African players to make the 2024 Puskás Award shortlist, alongside Yassine Benzia of Algeria, Denis Omedi of Uganda, and Paul Onuachu of Nigeria.

His inclusion highlights the increasing prominence of African players on the global stage.

A Proud Moment for Ghana

For Ghana, Kudus’ nomination continues the nation’s tradition of producing players capable of competing at the highest levels. His inclusion in the Puskás Award shortlist is a moment of pride for Ghanaians and a testament to the talent emerging from the country.

The Puskás Award has previously featured iconic goals by Ghanaian players, such as Michael Essien’s thunderous strike for Chelsea against Barcelona in the Uefa Champions League semi-final in 2009 and Sandra Owusu Ansah’s brilliant effort in 2021. Kudus’ entry adds to this legacy and inspires a new generation of footballers.

The winner of the 2024 Puskás Award will be determined by a global vote comprising football fans and an expert panel. Voting is currently open, and Kudus will undoubtedly have the backing of Ghanaians and West Ham supporters worldwide.
