Maresca Praises Chelsea’s Progress But Jokes about Cucu’s Slip-ups Against Spurs
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has admitted his side is exceeding expectations this season but remains cautious about their title ambitions despite a thrilling 4-3 comeback win over Tottenham on Sunday.
The victory at the Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium, which saw Chelsea overturn a two-goal deficit, was marred by defensive errors, including two slip-ups from left-back Marc Cucurella that led to Spurs’ early goals. The Spaniard later switched boots to address his footing issues, but his misfortune didn’t escape Maresca’s humor.
“Arsenal, [Manchester] City, and Liverpool probably don’t slide like Cucurella did,” joked Maresca in his post-match press conference. However, he quickly shifted to a more serious tone, emphasizing Chelsea’s need for consistency and improvement.
The Blues, currently second in the Premier League, are just four points behind leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand after their weekend fixture was postponed. This is a significant improvement from last season’s sixth-place finish under Mauricio Pochettino.
“We are ahead of my expectation,” Maresca admitted. “In terms of the way we play on the ball, off the ball, and in terms of the results.”
Despite their strong start, the Italian manager insists Chelsea is not yet ready to compete for the title. “We are far from these teams,” he said, referencing Arsenal, Manchester City, and Liverpool. “The plan is to improve day-by-day and not let the players slow down. They know another player is waiting to come in.”
Maresca’s leadership has revitalized a Chelsea side that appeared disjointed last season. While fans are beginning to dream of a title push, Maresca’s measured approach highlights the long-term project underway at Stamford Bridge.
For now, the Blues are focused on building momentum and maintaining their impressive form as they look to challenge England’s elite.
