The Porcupine Warriors’ agonizing four-game losing streak in the Ghana Premier League came to an end on Saturday, 6th April, as they secured a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Bechem United at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park in Bechem.
The pressure was on Kotoko heading into this match. After a string of disappointing results, fans were growing increasingly restless, questioning the players’ performances, and player selections and tactics of head coach Prosper Ogum.
Despite failing to find the back of the net, Kotoko displayed a resolute defensive performance. Goalkeeper Ibrahim Danlad, making a return to the lineup due to Frederick Asare’s unavailability, was in inspired form, making crucial saves to deny Bechem United from scoring.
Kotoko were under significant pressure for much of the game, with Bechem United dictating the tempo in midfield. However, the home side was unable to breach the resolute Kotoko backline, who stood firm throughout the ninety minutes.
The match wasn’t without its share of drama. In the 30th minute, the referee initially awarded a penalty to Bechem United after Nurudeen was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the penalty box, but upon a consultation with the assistant referee, the decision was overturned by the center referee. This controversial moment could have significantly altered the course of the game.
The draw leaves Kotoko in 7th position in the Ghana Premier League standings, at least until the conclusion of Sunday’s matches. While it represents an end to their losing streak, some fans might argue they missed an opportunity to secure a vital victory against a Bechem United side currently placed fifth.
