Ghana head coach Otto Addo has offered a strong endorsement of the Ghana Premier League, revealing plans to feature more home-based players in the upcoming Unity Cup clash against Nigeria on May 28, 2025, at the GTech Community Stadium in Brentford.

Speaking to the media ahead of the match, Addo praised the standard of the domestic league and confirmed that the Unity Cup would serve as a platform to showcase talent from the Ghanaian top flight.

For me, the Ghana league is like every other league, I’ve been watching a lot of games live, but we always observe the league. We try to pick out the best players.

He noted that the Black Stars have consistently included local players in recent matches and said that more opportunities would be extended during the Unity Cup to players who are yet to feature on the international stage.

We will now use the Unity Cup to bring in some players from the Ghanaian League, which we haven’t seen before on an international level, he explained. So if you have watched our recent games, we always had local players in our squads also playing, and so I rate the league very high.

Addo stressed that the ability of domestic-based players to compete at the highest level reflects the growing quality of the Ghana Premier League.

Otherwise, we wouldn’t have players in our squads which can compete also on that level, he added.

Like I said, we even brought more players from the local league, and [we’re] looking forward to seeing them on that level.
