Ghana’s head coach, Otto Addo, has emphasized the importance of the Unity Cup not just as a competitive fixture, but as a valuable stepping stone toward the Black Stars’ upcoming campaigns.
Speaking ahead of their clash with Nigeria on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, Addo described the tournament as a “very, very good opportunity” for both performance assessment and fan engagement.
For us, it’s a good test, and it’s for our confidence, Addo said. It will be good for the upcoming games.
With September’s qualification matches looming, Addo views the Unity Cup as a platform to address lingering uncertainties within his squad. “We really need to know, we have so many open questions on players,” he noted, highlighting his eagerness to evaluate new and young talent under pressure.
Addo also expressed satisfaction with the chance to offer emerging players opportunities to prove themselves on an international stage. “I’m happy to give also some new and young players some possibilities to play and to show what they can,” he stated. “Surely, after this tournament, some questions will be answered.”
Beyond the technical and strategic aspects, Addo pointed out the emotional and cultural significance of the match, especially for the Ghanaian diaspora in England.
We have a big community here in England. It’s very, very important for them to see and feel the players, he said.
