Richard Akpokavie has been elected as the new President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), winning 44 votes to defeat his challenger, Michael Aggrey, who received 19 votes.

Saturday’s election marks a remarkable comeback for Akpokavie, who narrowly lost his previous attempt at the presidency four years ago, falling short by just seven votes to former president Ben Nunoo Mensah.

Akpokavie is no stranger to the GOC, having served as General Secretary from 2017 to 2021 before contesting the 2021 presidential elections.

A former athlete, he once captained Ghana’s national hockey team during his sporting career.
