A late goal from substitute Mikel Oyarzabal made the crucial difference, even though Spain dominated possession and had better opportunities throughout the match.

After a cautious start, the first half ended goalless. Spain took the lead early in the second half with a goal from winger Nico Williams.

Cole Palmer equalized for England with a long-range shot just under 20 minutes from time, shortly after being substituted in by coach Gareth Southgate.

However, with only four minutes remaining, Spain regained the lead. Despite England’s efforts to find another goal, Spain held on to win.

England’s men’s team continues their 58-year trophy drought. Under coach Gareth Southgate, this was the second major final in three years, following the penalty shootout loss to Italy in the delayed Euro 2020 final at Wembley.

“It’s a missed opportunity. Reaching finals isn’t easy. We had to seize the moment, but we failed again,” England captain Harry Kane told ITV. “It’s extremely painful and will hurt for a long time.”

Entering Euro 2024, Spain weren’t considered top contenders, with England, France, Germany, and Portugal favored by bookmakers. However, their strong group stage performances significantly improved their odds. Spain previously won the Euros in 2012, 2008, and 1964, making them the kings of European championship for a record fourth time.

With Sunday’s victory against England, in the Euro 2024 final, Spain becomes the first team to win all seven matches in a Euro championship, scoring 15 goals.
