The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has set up a seven-member committee to investigate the tragic death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju.
Olanrewaju collapsed in the ring and later passed away after an eight-round international light heavyweight bout against Ghana’s Jon Mbanugu at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra on Saturday, March 29, 2025.
In response to the heartbreaking incident, the Minister has appointed a committee led by Ambassador Major (Rtd) Amarkai Amarteifio as Chairman. Other members include Peter Zwennes Esq., Mr. Ekow Asmah, Samuel Bartels Esq., Mr. Eddie Pappoe, Mrs. Juliana Addo-Yobo Esq. (who will serve as Secretary), and Dr. Martin Engmann.
The committee’s mandate is to uncover the circumstances surrounding Olanrewaju’s death, assess whether event organizers and promoters took sufficient safety precautions, and determine if the Nigerian licensing authorities were diligent in approving the boxer’s participation based on his experience and qualifications.
Furthermore, the committee will review the conduct of all match officials and recommend sanctions where necessary if any professional standards were breached.
