Former Black Stars midfielder, Sulley Muntari, has delivered a harsh critique of the Ghana Premier League, describing it as a complete “mess”.
Muntari, who began his professional career with Liberty Professionals in 2000, expressed frustration with the poor state of facilities and management he encountered when he returned to play for Hearts of Oak during the 2021-22 season.
“I enjoyed my time at Hearts of Oak—the fans and the president were amazing,” Muntari said in an interview with 3Sports. “But the league itself is a big hole where money is wasted. There’s no future for the local league. It was a mess when I played, and it might be even worse now. If we don’t invest in fixing this, we’ll never produce top players.”
He also highlighted the dire state of sporting facilities in the country, adding, “The changing rooms smell bad, and there’s no sense of respect or professionalism. I didn’t even want my laundry done at the club—I took it home. It wasn’t just one team; it’s a problem across the board.”
Muntari, who enjoyed a stellar career in Europe, played for top clubs like Udinese, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Portsmouth, Sunderland, and Deportivo La Coruña. During his two-decade career abroad, he won the UEFA Champions League and Serie A titles with Inter Milan (2008-2010) and the FA Cup with Portsmouth in 2008.
Muntari earned 84 caps for the Black Stars, scoring 20 goals. He represented Ghana in four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and three FIFA World Cups (2006, 2010, and 2014) before retiring from international football in 2022.
