UCL: Marcelino Confident Thomas Partey Will Rise to Occasion Against Spurs
Villarreal manager Marcelino has expressed full confidence in Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey ahead of the club’s UEFA Champions League opener against Tottenham Hotspur in London on Tuesday evening.
The fixture not only signals the start of Villarreal’s European campaign but also marks Partey’s competitive return to English football following his departure from Arsenal last season.
The 32-year-old spent five years at the Emirates before moving to Spain in the summer, and his latest assignment reunites him with familiar territory against a formidable Spurs side.
Partey’s availability for the clash has drawn attention beyond football, as the Black Stars deputy captain is currently entangled in ongoing rape and sexual assault proceedings in London. Despite the legal cloud, Marcelino insists his new signing is fully prepared to perform at the highest level.
“Thomas is ready,” the Spanish coach told reporters. “We are delighted to have him because of his ability, his leadership and his quality as a person. He has played for top clubs, he has the experience, and we trust he will show his level.”
The Group Stage tie carries an extra layer of intrigue as Partey will face off against international teammate Mohammed Kudus, who joined Spurs earlier this year and has quickly become a central figure in Ange Postecoglou’s midfield.
The showdown of the two Ghana internationals adds a Black Stars flavour to one of the most anticipated matches of the round.
Kick-off is at 19:00 GMT in London, where Villarreal will look to make a strong statement against a Tottenham side keen to stamp their authority early in the Champions League campaign.
