As the Black Queens of Ghana gear up for their semifinal showdown against host nation Morocco in the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2024), head coach Kim Lars Björkegren is leaving no stone unturned in preparing his team for the challenge ahead.
The Swedish tactician, who has led Ghana to an impressive campaign thus far, spoke confidently during his pre-match press conference, emphasizing strategic planning, mental focus, and national pride ahead of the clash.
“I study everything. I watch the patterns, the matchups. I like to feel in control, even if I’m not the one on the pitch. That’s where the planning with my staff comes in,” Björkegren explained, highlighting the level of detail behind the scenes.
Facing Morocco in front of an expected crowd of over 21,000 fans will be no easy task, but the coach believes his players are mentally prepared to handle the pressure that comes with playing against the host nation.
“Sure, a stadium packed with 21,000 fans can be intimidating, but it can also work the other way. If we stay calm and focused, we can silence that crowd,” he said.
Björkegren acknowledged the unique atmosphere such a match presents, but rather than shy away from it, he encouraged his team to embrace the moment and channel the pressure into performance.
With Ghana just one win away from the final, the coach reminded everyone of the significance of the moment, not just for the players, but for the entire country.
“This game means a lot to the country. We’re here to represent Ghana. We know it’s going to be tough, but we’re ready. We will give it everything,” he added.
